Dojo Ediquette

The place where karate-do is practiced is called a dojo. This is more then just a gym but a house of respect. Classes begin and end with respect as seen in the bowing in and bowing out ceremony.

Karate-do Shotokai

Karate-do ShotokaiAs a place of respect, one should be on time and not interrupt classes or instructors by being late.

Karate-do ShotokaiDo not wear jewellery during class. Especially watches, big rings or necklaces.

Karate-do ShotokaiDo not chew gum or eat candy. Obviously this is a safety issue.

Karate-do ShotokaiKeep fingernails and especially toenails trimmed. Long nails can cut other students, or be bent back (ouch!).

Karate-do ShotokaiKeep your gi or uniform clean and presentable. It’s condition represents YOU!

Karate-do ShotokaiBow whenever you enter or leave the Dojo. Also bow to partners before and after practice.

Karate-do ShotokaiPlease do not track your wet muddy boots across the dojo floor. We will be practicing in it in our bare feet later.

Karate-do ShotokaiBe sure to go to the bathroom prior to your class—very important for our youth. This is very disruptive to fellow students who may be practicing with you and very annoying to instructors who will have to repeat themselves upon your return.

Karate-do ShotokaiShow instructors respect by being quiet and still during demonstrations
